Principles

Four rules for what we build and what we say about it.

  1. 01

    Measured over impressive.

A number without its uncertainty is a guess.

A figure on its own invites more trust than it has earned. So we put its uncertainty beside it.

    An answer Rock bowl

    −4,082.0m³

A number line around the net volume of −4,082.0 cubic metres. An inner band shows plus or minus 66 cubic metres, an outer band plus or minus 199 cubic metres. Both are estimates.

±66 m³ if heights are 5 cm off

±199 m³ if 15 cm off

  2. 02

    Refuse before misleading.

If the system can’t support an answer, it says so.

A wrong number that looks right is worse than no number. A refusal is an answer too.

The OJAS 4D volume panel reading: Not produced. 100.0% of the area inside the boundary has no elevation data, a volume over holes would be a guess. Shrink the boundary to covered ground.
  3. 03

    Field over slides.

Trust what has worked in the real world.

Our figures come from real runs. When we can’t do something yet, we say so: OJAS 4D can’t yet tell when a boundary sits over water or glass.

  4. 04

    Human in command.

Systems inform decisions. People make them.

Our software shows its working, so the person who decides can check it.
